DIY Dried Orange Garland

For years, I have admired the gorgeous dried orange garland seen on Pinterest and Instagram and in countless magazines.  It’s the perfect natural element to combine with fresh or even faux holiday greenery.  After seeing several friends successfully create them recently, I decided to give it a try.  And lucky for all of you, I’m going to share what NOT to do when making dried orange garland.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

  • 2-3 large naval oranges
  • Jute twine
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet

DIRECTIONS:

Begin by slicing oranges crosswise about 1/4″ thick using a serrated knife and place on a parchment lined baking sheet.  Use a paper towel to soak up some of the juices.

Bake in a 200 degree oven for two hours and then check.  (I baked mine at 250 degrees and ended up burning a batch so a lower temperature might work better.)  You will likely end up baking them for four or more hours in total, but I recommend checking them after two hours since every oven bakes differently.  The goal is to get them as dry as possible in the center without browning them TOO much.

Allow them the slices to cool and dry out even more (overnight if possible).  And don’t forget to appreciate how AMAZING they smell!!! Next, you’ll take whatever sharp object you have on hand (I used needle nose pliers) to poke a hole through the center of each slice.  String the twine through the hole and continue to add all the slices.  I ended up with thirteen slices on my garland.

You could also add cranberries in between the orange slices for an extra pop of red.  I may end up making another strand using the cranberries before all is said and done.  For now, though, I absolutely LOVE the way it turned out!  It was the perfect touch to our vintage fireplace.

Now let’s just hope Santa doesn’t try to come bounding down our chimney….
